australian memorial, united nations memorial cemetery - korea

DescriptionPhotos
Client:
Australian Embassy, Korea.

Project:
Design, build and install a Memorial to the Australian service of the Korean War.

Site:
United Nations Cemetery Busan Koera. This site is over 7 hectares in an urban context, of highly manicured gardens, water features and symbolic memorials.

Project Detail:
The project involved close collaboration with stakeholders including the UN, The Australian Defence Force and The Office of Australian War Graves in Canberra. The Cemetery is a peaceful sanctuary in a busy city that is highly regarded by the Korean people.

Overview:
The selection of materials was key to the long term durability of the memorial as the climate varies from minus 20 in winter to high 30's in summer. Stone and bronze were used together in a simple ensemble with design reference to the fortifications used in the war.

Visitation: The Cemetery receives over a million visitors a year.
