trainworks, rail heritage centre - nsw

Client Brief:

Design and fit-out at Rail Heritage visitor attraction in a regional location.

Project Detail:

The Rail Transport Museum has been located in Thirlmere since the 1970's. RailCorp made a significant investment in new facilities across the 5.4 ha site and HPA were engaged during construction to design and construct the visitor experience.  This focused on fitting out the Main Exhibition Building including all interpretation, multimedia and audio visual.

Trainworks is a major heritage and tourism (hybrid) attraction located on the Southern fringe of Sydney.  The facility houses The Heritage Rail Collection of NSW Railways including a number of high value collection assets like the Royal and Governor Generals Carriage.  Our engagement was to take the bare building shell from the base building contractors (Robson Civil Projects) design the visitor experience across the whole site and implement the works as Principal Contractor.

HPA created the name and graphic identity for the attraction. Wayfinding, site circulation and a large playground were designed and installed. A thematic structure was overlaid on the 'museum zone' and objects sourced from various collections for display in custom joinery and showcases, interpreted with soundscapes, copy, touch-screen interactives and audio visual. A more substantial object theatre tells the story of one locomotive through 20th century Australian history. A substantial 'kids zone' explores collection items and technology with set pieces, digital interactives and traditional interactive displays.

Capital Project Cost:

$30M - Fitout cost $3.6M
